DIY Rustic Wood Star
Materials Needed
1x4 boards
wood glue
wood screws (1 1/2" or 2")
sandpaper (100 grit or higher)
paint or stain (optional)
Tools Needed
Miter saw or circular saw
Jigsaw
Drill (optional)
Paintbrushes (1 or 2)
Step 1: Cut Wood to Size
Cut the wood to size.
Use a miter saw or circular saw to cut your 1x4 boards to the desired length. You'll need two pieces for each star, so make sure you have enough wood for all of them! Cut two boards at a time so that the angles match up perfectly.
Step 2: Create Star Pattern
You will need:
Jigsaw
Wood glue
Clamps (optional)
To begin, use your jigsaw to cut the ends of each board at 45-degree angles. Lay out your boards on a flat surface and arrange them in an overlapping pattern that creates a star shape. Use wood glue to attach all four sides of each board together at once, then clamp them in place until dry or secure with screws if you don't have clamps available.
Step 3: Sand and Paint
Sand the edges of your boards to create a smooth and even surface. Then, using sandpaper, gently sand the entire surface of each board. This will help remove any rough spots and create a smooth finish for painting or staining.
Next, apply your chosen paint or stain evenly across all four faces of each star shape using a paintbrush (or roller if you prefer). Allow it to dry completely before moving on to step 4!
Step 4: Attach Hanging Hardware
Now that you have the wood star cut and painted, it's time to attach hanging hardware. The easiest way to do this is with sawtooth hangers or D-rings.
Sawtooth hangers are great because they're easy to install and they allow you to adjust how far apart your star hangs from the wall. They're also super easy to find at any hardware store or home improvement center!
If you don't want any extra hardware on your rustic wood star, then go ahead and use D-rings instead! These come in different sizes so make sure that whatever size fits best with your project before purchasing them (you might need two).
Step 5: Hang Star
To hang your star, use nails or screws. If you choose not to hang it, then place it somewhere else in your home where it will be admired by family and friends.
